Yep. A buddy did exactly that and bought a spare housing from ebay and drilled a hole for the audio-in jack (I had a hero 1, which did not have an audio jack). With the hero 3, which uses a mini-usb adapter for the mic, I ended up just getting a skeleton case, as doborder mentioned, with the cut-outs on the side (only for sunny days with 0% chance of rain
).
