But had Subaru fit a shorter final drive ratio to allow the automatic to accelerate as quickly as the manual I think a lot more buyers would have opted for an automatic.
Manual gearboxes are disappearing rapidly, and with good reason: they are too slow.
An 8 spd torque converter automatic using similar ratio spread to a 6 or even a 7 spd manual is going to be significantly quicker.
This is why Porsche, Ferrari and McLaren all fit DCT transmissions. Torque converter transmissions are actually better yet for road driving as they are smoother and lighter than DCT for the same torque capacity.
