I think the issue is poor word choice on behalf of the HPDE instructors. The word "ALL" should be replaced with the word "MOST." Most of your heavy braking should in fact be made in a straight line.. but you mustn't lift off the brake prior to the turn-in, but gently release as you transition into the turning arc.
It also depends on the type of turn. Fast-entry, low-speed, high-angle turns are a nightmare for true trail braking.. and would most likely overload a novice's abilitiy... because you'd need to adjust your entry and exit lines. A lil too much for beginners i think.
What to take away here is that there are many instructors that know what to do and what to say but they don't know why they are doing it and don't realize that the words coming out of their mouths don't relate to what they are doing.. but that's another matter.
