i was under this impression as well, though it appears to definitely not be true. the tuner has the option of saving the rom file in a format that can be opened in brzedit personal, but it's not useable in any other software. in any case you can't open communication with the ecu if a brzedit rom is on there in the first place. not sure if the tuner has the option of turning off the read protection, but i couldn't find it if it's there.
