Would the FT86 benefit from more power as you've pointed out, absolutely. And is your call for Subaru/Toyota to add more power justified, yes.
Toyota is supposedly doing a hybrid FT86 in 2015, which I'm not a fan of. Subaru is quiet about any possibility of adding a Turbo to the BRZ, although the new Forester has a Turbo FA20.
So to your point, other cars off the lot will out accelerate the FT86, but few will out handle it. And if you take, say an FRS ($25k) and add coilvers, wheels/tires, turbo/supercharger, and exhaust ($8k), the resulting car will be extensively more fun to drive and completely out perform a CLA250/BMW 2series. Coilovers, wheels, and exhaust aren't even needed, so $5k to truly compete.
Guess it comes down to if someone wants luxury vs modded performance.
BTW, sorry about my flames, as I thought you came to talk crap, not about merits of 2 Series vs FT86.
