Are you still living in 1990's? Autos today are lighter, more efficient and have higher torque capacity.

Technology does not stand still. More people drive autos, hence more $$ are being spent to develop them.

Take the all new 2010 Subaru Legacy for example. With manual tran it weight at 3,275 lbs. The new CVT (auto) version of it weights 3,384 lbs. That is over 100 lbs heavier than its manual cousin. Not to mention it cost more for the auto version. CVT might be better than the old school auto but it is still nowhere as light or as fun as an old school manual tran.
