I didn't do it, I was busy... and slacking a bit. But I think you're on the right track with what moto posted. I think the battery is similar to a cmos battery. Turning the car on before starting it gives it enough juice to keep it in memory while the engine cranks and keeps the settings. If there isn't a software solution, perhaps there is a hardware solution?
