Like the little metal flex tabs on the OEM (and replacement OEM pads) that put leverage on leading edge of the pad, pulling it away from the rotor face. This brilliant little detail goes a long way in reducing longitudinal tapering. I just replaced my pads the old ones, even with a few trips to the track, didn't show one iota of tapering.
Haven't seen this in practice in most vehicles.
