Tune Comparisions
Alright I have decided to make this post/section about the different tunes and things I have tried/worked with as a comparison. So this will contain product comparisons from the drivers stand point and running themk as well as some Dyno results and bolt on product changes.
UniChip vs. OpenFlash Stage 1.1 Tunes
First and Foremost I have decided to sell my Unichip. I think it has a great customer service team and the product does work well. However I am disappointed by the fact that E85 Tunes have been promised for about a year and not delivered.
Now as this was my first time with the SCCA or a Cone Event (I am used to actual courses, nothing against the SCCA or the event I had a lot of fun... besides standing in the pouring rain for 20 minutes until it let up guarding cones while no one drove... and when they have events close to me I plan on joining in) so my first few I went off course. However by my last three I got comfortable and I will say that the FR-S on the UniChip Tune I was using (Fuel - Timing + for full exhaust, no header and an AirRaid Intake) felt good and I got a best of 54.x. The UniChip pulled really nicely up top in comparison to the Open Flash Stage 1.1.
With the Open Flash (It was dry out for these runs too as I ran at the beginning and the end) it was different. I had more time to play around as I was already used to the setup and trying to push things further. However I had a habit of hitting one particular cone two times out... frustrating. But the very big difference was the Torque dip, it was almost gone. The car really felt great down low but up top it did seem to not pull as hard as the UniChip did. A trade off but without a doubt a very nice one. The car felt a little smoother to me as well just all around. So the canned tune with no changes yet really is a nice one, I am still looking forward to the Data Logging feature being turned on soon.
My Best time with the Open Flash Stage 1.1 was again a 54.x so this shows the UniChip and Open Flash are very competitive. I personally feel the Open Flash has more ability in the long run even with the learning curve that I expected to deal with going into it. The fix of the Torque Dip alone has shown me that it is well worth the 495 they are asking for it. The ability to tune to get that top end up as well is present and frankly means to me with some work I can do the same.
Short and Quick
UniChip (Fuel -, Timing +, Exhaust & AirRaid) Pulls well up top, 54.x was the best time
Open Flash Stage 1.1 Canned Tune, hardly any Torque Dip but a little less up top. 54.x Best time.
OFT Stage 1 vs Stage 2 vs Stage 2 UEL E85
Its been awhile since I updated but I figured it was time to get started on a few more of the comparisons I have done.
First my modifications at the time of testing were:
Agency Power Header (no cat), a 2.5inch Up Pipe I had made, Resonated Mid Pipe no cat, Isis Catback, AiRaid Intake, Perrin Pulley.
To me when I first tried the Stage 2 I felt it took away from the car's driving feel. I actually went back to the Stage 1 for a long time just because I really enjoyed feeling the car make power. The Stage 2 does in fact make more power but with the way it handles the Torque Dip that ability to feel the power just come on is taken away and well... in this car I admit its a great feeling.
When the E85 tune hit the market I jumped on it as I had been waiting to do. (I run E85 on my Vette as well, have for years) While it does still have some cold start issues to be resolved, so far things work great. Its smooth and without a doubt makes more power than the Stage 2 gas tune. It feels really strong all the way through but I did lose about 4-5mpg which is to be expected. (It basically takes 30% more E85 to run a vehicle correctly) I would recommend anyone run E85 that has it close to them, it really does give our vehicles a very nice jump in power.
Neither version presented any drive-ability problems. They both drove great and as Shiv releases updates I have applied them. The Additions of Flat Foot Shifting and Launch Control took some time to get setup as I needed them but I like both features a lot. They work as promised and are very simple to understand.
