Treating torque as a moment (which it is), it would make sense that the 5x114.3 can handle more torque as the force being applied to the wheel (at the bolt) is farther away from the center compared to the 5X100 size.

d=distance
M=moment (tq)
If the torque is held constant and the distance from center is increased the resulting force will be inversely affected.
