It is ~40-50 lb weight penalty. As for what I am about to say, this was told to me by a service rep / manager at a Subaru dealership: Apparently with equal gearing the auto was beating the manual, even without the ability for hard launches; "they" (being Toyota/Subaru) decided to give the auto more fuel efficient gearing so as to not alienate the MT crowd. I personally have no proof of this, just relaying what was told to me.
