The auto is the safe route for me. You get the best of both worlds with some sacrifices. My last stick was an MR2T and I dread the laborious 3rd pedal in daily congested freeway commutes. A stick is great for the occasional jaunt but not as a daily driver.

That said, an auto on an 86 is not even a remote possibility without the true manual-auto and paddle shifters it has. Some autos even in manual mode will upshift for you but not ours so you can bounce off the redline all day if you choose. For safety reasons, it does downshift if you lug it enough.

Moreover, even in full auto mode, our cars will downshift if you tug on the paddle shifter placing you in quick control in a corner. It will eventually go back to D mode.

My daily commute home starts with a busy freeway in full auto. Then I switch to manual mode when I hit the mountain roads, mostly going between 2nd and 3rd gear. I love the rev-matching as well, just like on my old SMG M3.

Like I said, best of both worlds.
