This is a small, high-revving engine, so it's barely working at 3500rpm. I cruise at 85mph all the time on the interstate, and my Outback is turning 4k at that speed (and I have 117k miles on it with no problems at all). I'm surprised you say other cars are only turning 2500 at that speed though - you must be used to fairly powerful sedans or something similar. Most cheaper/smaller cars will be at 3k+ at 80-85mph.
