In reality a duct or mustache covering something will not make any difference to performance as long as the opening is there. Air will reach all parts whether or not something is in front when you are driving. Otherwise if you used that type of logic with all parts then why on earth would an intercooler be put infront of the radiator . GruppeM is a really big company and I would doubt that they didnt keep stuff like that in mind when doing the R&D for this car and make sure it works for both models. Rarely do you see parts work for one model and not the other. And when it is that case its ussually because of things like LHD/RHD. Like Oil Catch cans for example.

I don't think it'd matter on flow either but I'm assuming
monkeychopkick was concerned more that the FR-S grille might receive more flow than say the BRZ (however miniscule that amount might be) not really that it wouldn't work at all. Also, maybe they were assuming that the more the duct was directly exposed to free flowing air the better, maybe?
Upon further picture reference inspection, the FR-S grille doesn't really have much of a usable opening than it appears. The grille appears larger but if you look closely has a solid backed portion right around the same area that the BRZ's mustache would be (covering the unsightly bumper crash beam I suspect).
