While I agree with you in theory ..... I still like to downshift. Why? I'm not sure. Maybe it comes from my first driving experiences with vehicles with mechanical brakes (which were not always dependable); maybe it comes from driving tractor-trailers (where downhill gearing was a good backup for the brakes); maybe I just like to shift (it's twice the fun when you shift up AND down the gears ....
