I'm an engineer by day, so studying the basic concepts was something I did long before ever trying to operate it. At least in my mind, understanding how something works is very instructive when learning how to use it properly.
That said, I still can't shift and revmatch fast enough to even think about downshifting all the way down before a light. When it's reasonably safe, I go through the motions as practice.
