Modern automatics are nearly always in lockup mode. Where you been?
Modern software controls the lockup clutch to be active in all but first gear.
Indeed, Mercedes Benz has a transmission with only a lockup clutch and no torque converter at all. It's a seven speed, equivalent to a torque converter 6 spd and uses a wet plate lockup clutch instead of the dry plate everyone else uses. Mercedes has just announced a 9 spd version to compete with the ZF and Aisin 8 spds.
