The Lexus key does not unlock the car until you make physical contact with the inside of the door handle. And you can start the car with the key anywhere in it unless the battery is dying. The battery projects the RFID signal so that as long as it's anywhere in the car, the car will start.
But don't take my word for it. Ask Lexus.
