Thinking a bit more about it, I wonder if it was a marketing conflict. That being that it would probably be a boxer 4 with a turbo. Someone could easily make the comparison between it and the Subaru engines. The STi is as 300 and 300 and if Porsche wanted to not look inferior from the a comparison stand point, they'd have to make a smaller 4 (excuse for lower power) or have a 4 that is pushing as much power as their 6-cylinder which Porsche sticks to their hierarchy of models and detuning...?
Just a thought.
Edit: scratch that! Did a quick google search and the rumor mill is still pumping and current.

New looks are cool, but just wait until you see what the folks over in Stuttgart cooked up this time for the iconic roadster: a turbo cramming 50 extra ponies in for a grand total of 360 hp. What’s even more exciting is the fact that Porsche is doing this without it’s 3.4-liter flat-six. In fact, they’re slicing two cylinders right off in favor of a 2.4-liter flat 4, meaning a faster car that’s more forgiving at the pump.
A less potent version will also make its way into the Cayman and base Boxster models. This is great news for anyone thinking of buying a Boxster, because they know how much fun they are already with 310 ponies pushing past curvy roads. Furthermore, the car will shed some curb weight, meaning that extra power will punch even harder.

Only issue I have with this data is if the 360hp does make it into the upper level Cayman is that would mean the Cayman would probably be faster around a track than the base Porsche 911...which we know they have kept as the flagship before and detuned the Cayman.
