I'm afraid I can't tell you anything about the remote engine start system; maybe more knowledgeable people can help.
I find the Smart Entry&Start very convenient, but I don't want a remote engine start; maybe, if I had a garage. I'm not sure if it's OK for the engine to warm up while idling, though.
An alternative - a Webasto heating system, but again I have no experience with those.
I've already said a thing or two about steering lock; once the engine is running, it won't stop if the key is no longer in range (e.g. you can leave the car taking the keys with you, and the engine will keep running). Not all cars will lock themselves if you go out of range (mine doesn't).
I have not noticed any interference, though it's said you should keep the key away from e.g. your cellphone.

If the key is out of range and the engine is still running it will continue to run, but an audible beep will sound as you get out of range of the vehicle. I've done this many times at a valet as I forget that the key is in my pocket as I just grab a ticket and walk away. I've never done is personally, but I believe that if you walk far enough away with the engine running and completely forget about the key, the car will eventually shut itself off, but the doors will not lock. Correct me if I'm wrong somebody...
Also, after having had this option in my past several cars I can't see myself ever going back. It's just too damn convenient and simplifies my life multiple times a day. Again, I can see people having their opinions, but I really can't see people knocking it without ever having used it on a day to day basis. Really, it's one of those things that just make your life easier. Could you live without it? Sure you could, but why would you if there wasn't a true reason to opt out of it. Of course, cost is certainly an issue but usually this option is part of a larger package (unless you get an German/European car). So the cost objection is sorta moot. From the info we've seen so far the package includes several other goodies that most people want. But hey if you want to stick a metal object and turn it each and every time to unlock the doors and turn the ignition on, then go for it. I'd rather live with the convenience. I just hope that it won't slow me down too much and won't get in the way.
