I have been interested in the 86 since the first concept and the rumors of a 35-40k price tag. Was very keen to purchase one. However after seeing the final production version I am very disappointed. The styling has been toned down a lot IMO so its no longer that aggressive/menancing looking. The worst part are the specifications though, N/A with only 147kw of power and 205nm torque? No factory option of a turbo kit? Are you kidding me?
I think that's pathetic. I knew the base model would be N/A but thought they would at least offer a turbo-charged model for some extra cash. Then the double-whammy comes along with the BRZ not being turbo-charged either so even if you do like the styling of the car you are going to be screwed over if you want any real sports-car power because you'll have to modify it and void your warranty... making it a pointless endeavour to buy either the 86 or BRZ brand new (unless you have the money to throw away).
I'm sure they will be great enthusiast cars with a good community and lots of aftermarket parts, but I couldn't justify buying one brand new knowing I'd have to void the warranty if I wanted to have any real fun. I think they have made a serious mistake not offering a turbo charged model, it would have raised the reputation of the car and would have increased sales because it would be a popular option (for the market they are targeting) and because people would be able to live with it like that for a year or so under warranty before modifying it.
I'd wait another year or so to get one on the second hand market (at a more realistic price)... but then I might as well just get a second hand wrx/sti. I would list a toyota equivalent but they don't have one... long gone are the days of toyota making great sports cars like the supra! I was hoping the 86 would be a return to their former glory but they missed the bar and fell flat on their face.
So I am one customer that toyota/subura have lost by toning down the production model and poor marketing.
