I find that interesting but I have a little bit of a different twist on the reason why. Even though it is diminishing with time, there has been and probably will be for a long time a bit of a stigma about buying Japanese products. Not only were they known for years (a long time ago) for building inferior products, the remnants of World War 2 hasn't gone far enough into the history books to not have an impact on some peoples attitude towards buying Japanese products. If they used Japanese characters to tag their cars that would only take the stigma a giant step further and I'm sure it would have even a more negative impact on their sales figures. As Charles Barkley said: "I may be wrong but I doubt it".
