I haven't checked up on it in months, honestly, but apparently people were either slightly melting or having burn-in. I had a WRX with glass fogs, so I know the trade off is that glass is way, way, way more susceptible to cracking, but you can put HIDs in them all day. Our plastic ones are nice for not cracking (mine are still strong after 25k, being in Alaska, and driving to southern California and back), but I can definitely see where there would be burning. I'm sure it depends on how often you use them as well.
Nothing wrong with getting the HID kit you want first, trying them out, and then maybe getting more appropriate fogs later.
I had fogs on my 2001 Impreza 2.5RS coupe and those were also very prone to cracking. Alaska is hell on front ends, though.

Yeah, I forgot about 35w vs higher. I prefer 35w, too, so let me know how it goes!
