I believe that piece in the middle is part of where the driveshaft is going through to the rear diff.
I don't have to worry, I have plenty of room in my car now for my friends to ride with me, the Focus has a very nice spacious back seat for as small as the car is, but my friends will never ride with me because it's so small. Yet, on New Year's Eve we crammed 4 of our asses into another friend's Cobalt. That thing was a pain in the ass.
