I've been playing around with the unit some more, and have observed the same thing now. Not only that, but I issued an OS reboot command from a terminal session and the device booted - all while the radio kept on playing!

I am now more and more convinced that several subsystems are simply audio and/or video inputs, that the headunit switches between. (DVD, Reversing camera, AuxIn, Radio)

Out of the box, the only exception to this has been the Sygic navigation system, which 'dims' the background audio and then overlays the navigation directions.

From testing, I have found that this happens magically happens when you bind the Navi button to the app in the settings menu. If you set the Navi app to something else - like Angry Birds, then that app's audio starts working.

This may help out some of the other folks having audio issues with their Sygic replacement - make sure that the Navi button is set to your custom GPS app to get the audio mixing to work correctly.
