Andrew, I hear what you're saying..... but so far you've offered no constructive help. So the stock ECU is a no-go. I figured it probably was anyway.

JP, that's what I was looking for, who is it that's done the conversion? I've read on NASIOC about an Impreza managing to use the stock EZ ECU on an OBD2 car. I'm hoping that integration may not be to hard into the FT platform.
With the FA20 about to make it's way into some other Subaru models, it should be easy to ascertain how easy gearbox compatibility is, or what may be required.
