You can theoretically use the lowest grade available, 87. The engine
should compensate for the fuel by reducing the timing to prevent knock. Again, theoretically there would be no ill effects other than a loss of power (and subsequent loss in efficiency (lower mpg)) and the engine not sounding as good (you may even hear a knock or two) but what you're doing is putting in a fuel the engine wasn't designed for and over the long term (1000+ miles) you'll be putting stress on the engine (due to knock) that could result in premature failure.
That is for this car, a modern vehicle with a modern ECU tuned from the factory. Once you step outside of that you open yourself up to more trouble.
Use the higher grade, spend the extra $2 per fill up and grab a reusable bottle of water from home instead of a coke. Double benefit to your mpg there
