To put it into perspective a 1999 Mitsubishi eclipse gsx had a curb weight of 3270lbs and 210hp... almost exactly the same as the R-spec. Of course the gsx had a heavy awd system but it was also a lot smaller than a R-spec. Everyone loved the GSX and now 10 years later Hyundai is able to release a car with similar numbers (and probably the same type of moddability) despite all the mandatory heavy safety features of modern cars; and people still rag on the genesis coupe. I think a lot of it has to do with badge snobbery and not the actual car itself.
And the GSX cost $27k in 1999 where as the R-spec is only $24k.

Agree with you. The Genesis Coupe is the closest thing that has come out to the loved DSM. I was considering buying a 2.0 Track until I saw the concept for FT-86. It's pretty much between those two cars for me
