GDI engines are more sensitive to intake port shape because they rely heavily on charge motion for mixture formation (unless it is a spray-guided combustion system like BMW uses). When you increase the coefficient of flow you decrease the tumble ratio, reducing combustion stability. That's a fundamental problem in design of a GDI system.
