And yes, you will insert your pick/tool in the opening and down in the plug and just above the pin there will be a small plastic tab that you lift up as you are pulling the wire out from the back at the same time.

The issues seem to be from the gasket and over torquing of the mounting bolts. There is a TSB listed specific for this where Subaru provides new nuts and a new gasket for the stock tails.

The torque spec for the mounting nuts is 4.5 Nm or 39 inch-pounds (3.25 ft/lbs).
