Now that I've figured out the format, it could be (almost) anything. I've written a tool to convert 8bpp bmps into the required format.
For now though, I'd be willing to convert a few by hand for people.
Just make sure that they are:
- width: 360
- height: 300
- colours used: use a maximum of 220 colours (In something like Gimp, convert to indexed mode using a palette size of no more than 220). Ideally, you'd also restrict the palette to using 16-bit-safe colors and use dithering to avoid ugly gradient steps.
This image is placed centred on the 800x480 screen, so won't ever be full-screen.
If I find the time, I'd also like to see what I can do about replacing the Android boot animation.
