Pretty common on the track and the street. I shift mid corner all the time, but only at the redline on track. You have to pay attention to weight transfer but it's not that big of a deal with a manual.

I personally love manual transmissions. I enjoy being that much more involved and I don't care about the time/speed I'm losing. From a tech perspective the manual is pointless, but for many drivers out there (obviously not all) the manual transmission is far from pointless.
