OK. I downloaded the file again and extracted it to the sd card.
With the card in the head unit I pushed and held the menu and volume buttons.
As before I got the blank white screen.
I continued to hold the 2 buttons down for another minute but no change
I released the buttons and left the unit on but so far still just the blank white screen.
I don't even get to see the update messages that I saw before so I have no idea if it is even trying to update. I guess I will leave it running for an hour or two just in case.
How long should the update take if it is working?
