As most of us already know the Scion FR-S and Subaru BRZ (Toyota GT86 in the rest of the world) are awesome handling cars and fun to drive. Most 86 owners use their car as their daily driver/urban assault vehicle. I mostly use my BRZ to run errands and pleasure drive. Thus, the purpose of this post to tell folks about my favorite "pleasure drive".
We, in Texas, are blessed with an abundance of roads and highways to get around on. Texas is a large and geographically diverse state and our roads offer a lot of nice scenery to view, as well. While we don't have anything like the famous North Carolina "Tail of the Dragon" drive, we do have the popular Texas Hill Country "Twisted Sisters" drive out near Leakey, Texas. Otherwise known to some as the "3 Sisters Run". Ranch Roads 337, 336 and 335. Popularized with the motorcycle crowd as one of the best drives in Texas.
San Antonio, Texas area 86 owners (SATX86) are blessed being relatively close by to enjoy the opportunity to regularly head out towards Leaky and do the 3SIST3RS! Some of us do it solo, sometimes few of us go out that way after the monthly Coffee and Ride meets or we organize a SATX86 event to run together as a group. I've done the 3SIST3RS about 7 times now! (Beginning to lose count.)
Back in March we had 10 FR-S/BRZs go together and the most recent event this past Saturday we joined forces with Austin area 86 owners and had 19 cars total. 15 were 86 cars. That's a new attendance record. Our next planned run should be sometime in late Summer or early Fall. For those out of our area, come and join us if you can by monitoring our events page in the Southwest region. Of course, some of us diehards will go out there again in a week or two at the drop of a hat so to speak.
Why? ...you say. Well, first,
because racecar. And second, each of these roads offer some nice twisties to drive. Nice might be putting it mildly...they are awesome. Perfect for experiencing and demonstrating the unique cornering, acceleration and road holding ability of 86 vehicles. This drive is the essence of why we love these cars.
I think everyone had a great time on the run and visiting with each other and it is our tradition to always stop at the Bent Rim Grill in Leakey, TX after the run to sit down and have one of the best tasting burgers in Texas. Already looking forward to the next 3SIST3RS run!
Here are some pics of the event the other day and a few from the past to give you an idea of what the twisties are like:
