You'll be fine. 8 inches is the widest accepted width for the stock tire. You could actually even go further but that'll stretch it and won't be within the recommended acceptable range for safety...

You can get lightweight 18's, so no I don't agree that 17's are the definitive must-have size for performance. For saving money? Definitely 17's. For staying in a particular stock class? Yes.

I think 17x8's would be the widest you could go safely with the stock Primacy HP's. You could stretch beyond that, but you'd be pushing it.

One reason is because he used his stock rims for winters and his OEMs have plenty of tread left and he's planning on getting 17x8s anyway. He can mount these while he saves up for better 235-40s.
