The reason why they selected a Toyota engine is probably related to the racing regulations. When an engine is swapped one can only use an engine from the same brand.

I didn't really notice a change after a break-in period. Also, I didn't notice any grinding when shifting. The only issue is the 1st gear noise when coasting (the play is probably not set entirely...

It did help somewhat as far as initial acceleration was concerned. But it what was detrimental in turns and detrimental in acceleration...
