Could be a wear issue, I do think it gets a bit worse over time. However the tirerack review of them comments on the noise they were getting also on presumably a fresh set.

Yeah I think I'll go the hockey puck route. My whole research started because my HF rubber "tip protectors" still sliced the paint right off the welds, and that just annoyed me.
