Yeah you need Recon if the engine you are swapping in has more or less cylinders than the factory motor. So swapping in an I6 into a car that was equipped with an H4 from the factory requires Recon.

I would say swap in another FA20 instead of going with another engine. Not entirely sure, but from what I saw, it looked liked you had to cut metal out of the engine bay to fit the 2JZ motor inside....
