Links finally dropped their plug in ecu option for the 86. it's not cheap at over 2k but it is a full stand alone ecu option. Pretty sure its FA20 only though

I believe you’re correct about the synchros. Using a GL4 only fluid as opposed to a GL4/5 is the way to go in my opinion. Redline makes a few options for gear fluid might want to check the bottle.
