cae ultra shifter vs short shifter

What is the difference between the CAE "ultra" shifter and a normal short shifter such as a kartboy? Really worth the $900 price tag?

I sure hope it doesn't make the shifter that long....

jdmblood 01-11-2016 11:38 PM

It does. It's designed for track cars. That height makes a lot of sense on a dedicated race car, since it reduces the amount of travel for your hands to work the shifter. That said, I'm fine with the stock height of the shifter. I don't live on the track.

If I were in the market to shorten the throws, I'd probably do the TRD quick shifter. The other short shifters actually shorten the height of the shift knob, and I'm really not a fan.

Proper race cars have long shifters so the driver doesn't have to move his hand far from the steering wheel to shift gears. If you read the link the actual movement to shift gears is only 65mm.

Edit: I was too slow

Holy shit i want that!!

But the exchange rate at the moment is horrible for us in Aust. AU$1300+ shipping :(

weederr33 01-12-2016 12:43 AM

I'm aware that many race cars have it. But I just find the money not worth it. Plus it looks ridiculous for a stock car haha. I have the TRD quickshifter, and personally, find it just right. That's what I'd recommend...

With the CAE Ultra shifter, it replaces all these stock components:

It also is recommended to be installed by someone with lots of experience working on vehicles... it is a bolt on yet not a bolt at the same time. The DIY I wrote covering the install should give you an idea of what is involved:

Honestly, there's no other shifter like it and I wouldn't want to use anything else now after experiencing it. This is not for those who want smooth effortless shifting, you have to shift it like you mean it every time - but it's the most satisfying shifting experience you'll ever have in an FR-S with the stock gearbox.

I STILL haven't installed mine.

Just to let everyone know, you should have upgraded motor mounts with this shift kit and yes it's worth the $900.00-$1k.
