Toyota 86 Automatic - Did anyone tune their car?
Hi Guys,
I have recently purchase a Toyota 86 automatic lol I know all purists will say go for the manual. I just like autos haha. Anyway I want to know if anyone did any modifications on their auto? I am looking to put a set of headers, over pipe n mid pipe(keeping back box stock) and I don't want the car very loud. I also will be adding a drop in filter. Im just looking for modest performance gains but what I really want is the boxer rumble(huge subaru fan) any advice, tips? Sent from my LG-H815 using Tapatalk |
Well hello @achishsingh and welcome to ...... The Forum .........
Yes, many modifications have been made by many people on these cars with both types of transmissions. You may wish to browse the many parts of this site for ideas. humfrz |
Thank you for the welcome @humfrz. I'm new to forums so still finding my way around. Will keep in browsing

Transmission isn't relevant to exhaust. I want to do the same but I'm going from front to back and tune. I want decent gains. I'd like 30 hp but that's probably not feasible with exhaust and tune. And I want an intake. Like you I don't want it super loud just a lil lol. I've searched the forums but its overwhelming. So many different opinions so many brands so many combinations.

All you can really do for exhaust is dig and hope that you will find somebody that has done the combo you are considering. Since there are thousands of possible combos that can be frustrating. There are several guys on here that have tried many different systems on their car and are still searching for just that perfect combo. The only word of advice I will throw out is to watch out for some of the really cheap knockoff systems. The feedback on them has not been great. I was lucky in that my car had the TRD exhaust installed by the dealer and when it was first started up I knew that was exactly the sound I was looking for so didn't have to go on a quest. If that hadn't been the case I would probably still be on a quest for that perfect tone and volume. |

Internal servers are down at work so time to try and be a helpful forum member lol. I'm AT as well and most modifications will work whether you are AT or MT. Some turbo kits and exhaust may not fit due to space restrictions but for the most part it shouldn't be an issue.
Tuning: Plenty of tuning solutions. If you are looking for an easy off the shelf approach check out the Open Flash Tablet. It comes with off the shelf tunes and also acts as a data logger. Most tuning shops will use Ecutek for their tuning which also locks you from editing the ROM but to each their own. You can get some pretty easy power gains tuning for E85 if that is available in your area. Open Flash Tablet supports this and most Ecutek tuners can do it as well. This usually gives ~15-20 whp on an NA car. Exhaust: Headers: Equal (EL) vs Unequal Length (UEL). Pretty minimal difference between the two styles. Unequal will help give you a boxer rumble. OP/Mid pipe: A lot of people only change out headers and the catback but you can still get some gains with a less restrictive OP and Mid pipe. Your second cat is in the midpipe so you may want a catted midpipe depending on where you live/emission restrictions. Catback: pick one that you like how it looks/sounds. Minimal performance gains to be had here. |
Hey guys thank you so much for taking the time and helping out. @

@tectonic what exhaust setup do you have on your auto? How does it sound when changing gears?

Can you upload a video? I havent seen many automatic frs/86/brz cars with exhaust on youtube

That sums it up pretty well. I don't have emissions at all so I can do whatever

I don't have a video and can't grab one at work but there should be a good amount of videos with a similar setup. AT vs MT is not really going to affect the noise in this case. It is a decent amount louder on cold starts (which i really like!) but the Q300 is not much louder than stock at normally driving levels. I do really like the sound at normal levels as well as high rpm. Driving in 6th gear at low rpm for just regular driving does have a really nice deep sound. |
Im considering going to powerflow(south African exhaust specialists) to do the exhaust upgrades. Hopefully I will get it done by next week, I will let you know how it goes
