RyanjohsonFRS is a scammer!

I had a WTB ad for some wheels (http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=99417) and received a PM from RyanjohsonFRS that he had a set of RPF1s for sale. After several messages back and forth, we settled on a price and I PayPal'd him the payment on Friday, January 1st. He said he'd ship them on Saturday.

I asked him on Saturday for a tracking number and he said he was too busy, so he'd ship them on Monday. On Wednesday, I asked him again for a tracking number and I got no response. So today (Thursday) rolls around and I start getting very nervous. I clicked through his profile and noticed someone else left him negative trader feedback on Monday. I then looked for the pictures of the wheels he sent me and noticed that he just stole them from the wheel directory thread.

I have a claim open with PayPal and they said if he doesn't respond in 10 days, they will refund my money back, thank goodness!

Please, nobody else buy from RyanjohsonFRS!

Only two posts, both offering something of which he may or may not actually have.

Good luck with refund, OP.

I have been buying parts on car forums for 10 years now (started with my 300ZX back in 2006) and I've never had an issue. I guess I just got too relaxed and it bit me.

Yeah I always hate to see people getting pulling stunts like this. I wish everyone could just be honest

MisterSheep 01-07-2016 07:15 PM

Sorry to hear this OP... hope you get the refund.

Regardless of what happens, the good thing is that you didn't send the money as a gift, so it should all work out! I can't believe people still complete online transactions with random folks via the gift option...:sigh:

good thing this guy does not know how to scam people... who tries to scam people without having them send as a gift over paypal? paypal will definitely make it right... and the scammer would have his account frozen.

This is why the member classifieds require a picture with the user name, date and FT86club on it be included with items offered for sale. This will not eliminate scams but would have made one like this much more difficult to pull off.

Anybody that sees materials for sale without the proper pictures should report it.
People also need to be much more careful when somebody responds by PM only and not on the open forum. Since the PMs can be the dark ally of the forum where the con artists and thieves lie in wait you need to extra leery.

I'll be the first to raise my hand when I screwed up, and I screwed up on this.

Like I said, I have been buying used parts on car forums for over 10 years. I have also been a moderator over at www.300zxclub.com and helped set-up all the rules for posting ads in the classifieds. So I would call myself experienced in dealing with buying things on car forums.

But, that all doesn't matter because I trust people too easily. This guy didn't strike me as a scammer because he was trying to get the maximum price for the set of wheels, which isn't typical for scammers.

Also, I did send the PayPal as a gift. Have always done it in the past. Will I do it in the future? Probably not. Even though you can't get a refund through PayPal's website for a payment sent as a gift, I called PayPal, was on hold for about an hour, then talked to someone for less than 5 minutes and they are giving the seller 10 days to respond and then they will refund my money. I'll update once 10 days has passed.

I REALLY hope you get your refund back. Joke's on the alleged scammer using the "gift" payment to scam people! Go PayPal!

86_Freak 01-18-2016 06:10 PM

Update: I got my $600 refunded back to me today. I feel much better now that I got my money back.

I'm not sure how the process would of been different if I would of paid for it as goods and services instead of as a gift, but remember, if you paid for something as a gift, not all is lost. I did and still got my money refunded.
