Borla Catback not that loud...cheap suggestions?
 

Hi,

I just installed the borla exhaust per recommendations, reviews and youtube clips. I purely only wanted an exhaust for sound. However, idk if I didn't install it right or what but it kind of isn't as loud as I thought it would be (maybe I should drive at higher rpms).

What are my options to make it louder that are cheap...? A buddy told me to buy the k&n drop in air filter and I should be good. Is that a good idea? Anything else?

EDIT: Newb to exhausts and etc., I've always only modded for aesthetics, but this car sounds too weak for as mean looking as it is.

Edited post, but I'll reiterate it here again. I am a complete newb on exhausts, drivetrain. When I mod, I only mod for aesthetics, never for power or sound or anything.

This is the first car I've owned that I wanted it to sound somewhat aggressive, so pardon my newb questions.

Looks like the above suggestions are somewhat cheap but I've poured way too much $ into my car than I initially would of wanted so kind of wanting to tone it down as those suggestions are priced above $150.

Is the drop in air-filter even viable as a solution? Will I hear an improvement with my borla? I was thinking of trying that first before the above suggestions.

A drop-in air filter is not going to make your exhaust louder.

No the filter will not change the sound of the Borla. It may add a small amount of intake noise but not much if any at all. If you want cheap you can gut your secondary cat as its free and will make it louder. If you still want it louder after that gut the OEM header, but you will probably want a tune at that point.

The answer has already been posted, but I'll reiterate it.

A catless front pipe is easy to install (very easy) and will make your car quite a bit louder (especially if you get a 2.75"-3" one). You'll pickup about 2-7 WHP as well. Cost... $100-$300.

Next up would be a catless header which is a little more work to install, but will add both torque and HP with a tune. Add 10-15 WHP Cost... $350-$1500.

Next would be an aftermarket overpipe. Add 1-4 WHP. Cost... $75-$300.

A drop-in filter won't make an appreciable sound difference, but you will pickup an extra 2-5 WHP from one. Cost... $35-$50.

Everyone, his location is in SoCal. CARB might be important, and I understand that it requires no cat replacement.

The intake filter will give you a little intake sound, and should keep you in line with CARB, I think.

Take a screwdriver and hammer.

Punch a hole in your muffler canister.

HFC front pipe or catless front pipe, or having an exhaust shop take out the resonator in the system.

The car will sound tame unless you do just a muffler delete, or a single exit exhaust. With that Borla setup I'm pretty sure it gets quieter in the higher rpms too lol.

Put borla uel header then the borla x pipe. For me it sound aggresive yet so sweet in my ear every after I push down that pedal lol

If you just want it louder, drive around in a city that uses a lot of salt on its roads in the winter for a season or two. Before you know it, you'll have holes in your exhaust system everywhere and you'll be plenty loud. Wanna speed up the process? A drill and some carbide bits are your friend. OR.. just invite a friend along and have him or her scream at you the whole time you're driving. That's loud. OR, you could just scream yourself. OR... hey, this is good.. download a sample .mp3 of your favorite racecar sound, use Audacity to make a really long loop of it, load it onto a flashdrive, then play it back on your car's audio system with the volume pegged. THAT'LL be REALLY loud!


....sigh.....

Sell the catback and get a muffler delete with some of the cash. You will put money back in your pocket and get the more aggressive sound you want.
