Pnt Snow Tires and Insurance
 

Didn't know about this until insurance called today and asked if we had snow tires. Apparently new law January 1 requires insurance companies to give a discount if you have snows on in the winter. Mine is 5% so isn't huge but a savings is still a savings.

Heard about this last week, going to give my insurance company a call today regarding this.

Did they ask for any proof of winters? How's it work? I bought mine second hand in really great shape, no receipt to show for them tho.

Is this for AB too?!?

Mine said that for now they will just take people's word for it but if you place a claim then they will want proof of both purchase and installation. They said later on they may ask for receipts at time of purchase but not worried about that right now.

I've had a winter tire discount for years (6 or 7 I guess now). Though, it's not huge, but every bit of savings sure does help.

When I change my provider, my new provider just asked what kind of snow tires would be on my vehicle and that was it.

Edit: I'd like to point out that I don't overly care about the discount. I have winter tires because I'm not an idiot who thinks that all seasons are good enough for south western Ontario. My safety is what made me get snow tires in the first place

Two things come to mind:

1) insurance companies will raise their baseline rates to make up the difference.

2) the article analyzes the merits of buying winter tires primarily from a personal finance perspective, instead of a safety perspective.

I've had a winter tire discount since I've had my first car. Maybe just the companies who don't already offer it will raise their rates.

Which is silly because the idea of giving you a credit is that you're less likely to crash with the winters on.

That's surprising, since you go through cars every few years. I thought most, if not all companies were already doing the discount. And that would definitely be a question they ask when you update your policy, unless of course the discount wasn't offered.

Problem is, how much were the winter tires? ;)

Hey... I have snow tires on my cars, always have. I just have to laugh that you save $40 a year after you send $800+ in winter tires. The insurance companies aren't going to lose money. They will just find a 'reason' to up your premium. Insurance is such a scam.. but you need it. Just have to pray you never use it.

I'm just saying that to put it in perspective, the 600-1000+ you spend on snows is worth it to me. My last set of winters lasted 6 years on one car, then another winter on another. The return on that investment was me not crashing in the winter. It's laughable to me when people will spend 1000+ on summer tires, then bitch and moan about buying winter tires.

I'm with you on insurance being a scam, especially as a young dude. But hey, one more year and my premiums go waaaaaaaay down!

You don't realize how much of a difference they make, until you drive a car with out winters. That said, if you drive like an ass hat, you will still end up in the ditch. Same with people who drive their studded tires, on bare pavement. *Facepalm*
