getting irritated wiring 2jz
ive done my homework on wiring the 2jz to an frs.
looking to do aem v2 with racepak(street version) and running the factory ecu for possibly A/C and of course power steering so far ive got chase bays telling me they do not sell the dual ecu anymore this is the email i recieved from them. "Hey Luke, We don't build those dual ECU harnesses anymore. First one worked, 2nd one the power steering and fuel pump didn't work, 3rd one ABS and DLC didn't work. Same exact harnesses and 100% no mistakes. The CANBUS system is a fighter. If we were able to do the installs ourselves it would be fine...theres always some trick. It just takes days to find it and its not worth it for production items and brand quality we represent. There are converters we could design but there isn't a big enough market yet. Thanks and sorry for the bad news. - Chase McMaster Chase Bays, Inc." so i tried multiple other company's saying they also dont offer the wiring swap. tweaked performance emailed me this "Hello, Plug and play JZ harnesses for FRS chassis are $1399. -Cam" wasn't very helpful though as i responded and asked again about if powersteering works and other stuff and no response yet. i know theres some guys out there that have done this wiring under budget. just curious to see how hard it actually is to get this wiring done right. i got quoted at $10,000 and thats insane. someone has to have some input on this, no i dont want to hear "2jz are gay. weight balance?/ good luck.:sigh::sigh::sigh::sigh::sigh::sigh::sigh::si gh: |
I hope you get an accurate answer to your question soon. I had no idea that the wiring harnesses and compatibility were this difficult to get right. $1,400 is one thing, but 10k?! It can't be this hard to do a swap.
As a side note, if you're able to get your wiring sorted out soon, please be sure to post up some pictures of your build. I'm sure everyone here would be excited to see it and would even refrain from "OMG WTF BBQ why did you ruin your perfect weight balance" posts! :) |
Get a good custom tuner/installer to custom wire you a jumper harness. I've had to do it for another project. Costs more obviously... but when comparing to $1,400 -$10k, I can't imagine it being that bad.
Edit: I need to search for a JZ wiring diagram again on google. Why did you go AEM if you don't mind my asking? There should be a full standalone ECU solution that is much simpler to piggyback on our ECU without pulling the entire wiring harness. |

aem v2 goes right with the racepak, also talked to joel grannas my neighbor with the worlds 3rd fastest stock trans supra, he has an fd with a 2jz in it loves his aem as well with his racepak seems to be my best bet... also looked into motec, standalone ecu wont need to run factory ecu, but this is a $4,000 system alone. adding a $1,300 wiring harness and $1,000 racepak thats quite expensive as well. |

ill have a complete build process thread as well with who ends up doing my wiring, the guys ive seen had been going with chasebays but they obviously stopped so i seem to be on my own lol... honestly havent even bought the car yet. still trying to find the right victim, have all the cash, just waiting on the right one. hopefully will have this project wrapped up in about 4months |
Pure Auto is your best best for this answer. And they're in MD. @Pure Automotive

Don't go with the AEM.
Buy a Haltech Elite for $2500 that will run great and interface just fine with the FRS CAN. Ditch the stock ECU, it's a giant POS. Dual ECU setups are the equivalent of duct tape and glue and you know it. Or a LiNK, they've got the GT86 CAN sorted too... Or a MoTeC M150... ....And then wire it yourself. All the diagrams are on the site. Designing a harness is easy. The rest is a matter of patching a few existing wires to appropriate ports, and bundling the rest in from the engine bay. . |
WOW you're doing a 2J swap. Was wondering when someone would get around to that.

wiring sucks...even those companies that say they can do it will not be able to do it as good as it should be done all said and done..there is a solid reason real motorsports grade wiring is so expensive...i have learned the hard way too many times...i hate wiring...i don't wish that upon anyone....good luck in your endeavor...it will unfortunately be a frustrating road from my experience.

You have two real options for ECU replacement while still supporting the factory CAN
Motec M150 (supports everything) Emtron KV8 (supports everything except direct injection crap) I just ordered a KV8 for my car getting an LS3 swap. They are under $3k. |
The Haltech Elite and the Link/Vipec products do not support the FRS CAN.
No AEM units (V2, Infinity, etc) support the FRS CAN. I deal with engine management systems for a living. |

I have a similar email from Emtron that says the exact same thing, with the data to support it. I'm not 100% about the Haltech, but I was told by somebody who sells them that they do. I haven't fact-checked that yet. |
Emtron told me in December that they had not finished with the can system of the FRS / BRZ even for swap options. Did not bother looking at Link / Vipec (nothing wrong with those options, just did not check them). When I was checking around there were only 2 options at the time Motec and the m150 was the go to for this platform. Mainly do to the inputs and outputs. Then Hydra was the other option. For the application I needed, it did not fit as it would not control the fly by wire set up we were using, and would have to add a pwm idle control. From my understanding they will be doing something with fly by wire some time this year.
Building a proper harness is not difficult, but by no means is it cheap. Proper wire, connectors, shielding, ect... Then you need to factor in the time required to build the one off harness. You will not build a proper harness for peanuts from supplies at the local auto parts store. Also factor in the needed sensors. You can get away with a couple of the factory sensors but that is about it. Also stay away from a dual ecu option, you are only opening your self up to headaches. Do it right the first time or end up paying extra to redo it. Good luck in your project. |
I can't answer every question that you have, I can't even begin to tell you how many hours we struggled with wiring. I can tell you that we ended up ruining an AEM ecu and wasting DAYS of time chasing an issue that was because the Chase Bays harness that we had was wrong in so many ways. They have in fact stopped making the "plug and burn, I mean play" harnesses because "CAN is too different from car to car" or at least that's what I was told in so many words. Imagine how it feels to find out that your $2000 ecu has burnt resistors because your $1000 wiring harness is wrong.
We don't integrate the 2jz into the car harness. We run it stand alone from the car, it's like a dual ecu setup where the 2 ecus have nothing to do with each other. I don't care if my factory cluster works, I have a Racepak, which I can program to show me anything I would ever want to know about the engine while I'm driving. So I don't really see the need for integration with the car. But that's just my personal preference. MPH still works off the ABS, fuel level still works , and everything else is on the Racepak. Tweakd performance has their own FRS and have been working on that swap harness forever. I have no idea if it works, I don't think I'll try to find out anytime soon. They are decent guys from my experience with them. PS I have no problems with my AEM, we went 9.2 @150 with it and will go faster next year. PSS I've said it before and I'll say it again, anyone who thinks they can pull off a 2jz swap for cheap is badly mistaking. It takes time, money, patience, and more money. |
