weird engine sound

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qSJG...ature=youtu.be

Fr-s
Manual
around 9k miles

it started making weird noise today
anyone know what's wrong with it?

it happened when i was on the street, all of sudden i was hearing annoying clicking sound and i thought it was from the car in front of me but it was coming from the engine

edit

I don't have any specific gas station preference, i go to which ever one is closest
and i always use the highest octane rating they offer

the sound actually went away when I was trying to record from cabin

edit

this is the cabin sound, you can hear it around 11 and 30 second mark
around 20second mark i gave it a gas

That high pitch sound, the one that sounds like crickets? Ahhh, you join the club of many many owners with that noise. Don't worry, its only the high pressure fuel pump, its a common noise with heaps of cars, no problems with them at all :)

Stratoside 12-29-2015 07:51 PM

really? it's pretty loud and obnoxious lol

MasonL1997 12-29-2015 07:59 PM

Yeah it definitely is, not much you can honestly do about it. Mine hasnt gotten it yet (touch wood it doesnt) but its nothing to worry about. Have a look at the list of issues thread, ill see if i can find it, and its filed under there.

Then the third heading down is the "Cricket Noise" which you seem to have

Stratoside 12-29-2015 08:37 PM

inside the cabin, the noise doesn't sound like cricket at all though
it sounds like constant knocking sound, pretty dull knocking sound

It's subtle but I hear it in your vid. Can you take one from inside the cabin? What happens when you gun the engine?

Not normal. Guys, go back and listen for the low frequency knock, almost a thud thud thud...

humfrz 12-29-2015 08:54 PM

They usually come out more in the summer time.

Have you changed type or brand of gas lately .. ??

Maybe filled up with 87 octane?
But yeah I hear that knock along with crickets.

Sigh-on-Rice 12-29-2015 10:31 PM

I listened to it loud that it hurts my ears, but I still didn't hear the low frequency knocking sound.

Do you notice it only when the car is idling? Is it constant? Does it happen when the engine is cold or hot? Does the noise change when you depress the clutch? Does the noise stay and the frequency goes up if you rev the engine slowly higher? Just asking a bunch of questions in case any of these rings someone.

soulreapersteve 12-29-2015 11:24 PM

I can hear that thud sound with headphones on loud volume setting.

Never have heard that particular sound before.

May sound weird but play on loud with headphones and close your eyes, focusing on just listening. You'll hear it.

Stratoside 12-30-2015 12:00 AM

the sound actually went away when i tried to take the video from cabin

also i always use the premium, the highest octane rating they offer

most recently i filled it up at 7-11, i think they only offered 91 or something?

this happened when I was driving home, when i was at the red light i heard some knocking noise

aegisdrgn 12-30-2015 12:03 AM

That's not good, bro. It's become sentient and is now hiding from you.

Listened again...aside from the high pitched sounds (that are normal) I can hear a lower pitched ga ga ga ga ga ga sound near the end of the video when the OP moves the camera to the driver's side of the engine.

Is that what you hear?

Yes. It's there the whole time but is more pronounced in the first couple seconds and again after he moves the camera.

It's not gas. Just keep an ear out for it and post up another vid if you can get it. We're all subbed.

stevesnj 12-30-2015 12:41 AM

Push in the clutch pedal and then listen for it

Or more to the point, does it go away?

I hear it too- much lower pitch than the cricket noise.

Does not sound like a bearing knock to me, though.

Sometimes I hear a sort of knocking in mine when it's cold and heating up. I can hear it in my cabin and by the driver side tire. It's been worrying me too....

My DI pump makes a bit of a tapping or light "knocking" noise, always has. It's really obvious as soon as I pop the hood, but I can hear it inside the car too. When the car is cold I can't hear it, but as it warms up it'll start making the noise. No issues in 16k miles and some track time :iono:

Hello @GT86girl541 and welcome to ......The Club ......

My take is that if you start worrying about all the "strange" sounds the FA20 engine makes ...... you're gonna wear out a lot of worry beads.

I suggest you just put premium gas in the car, have the regular maintenance done and enjoy driving it ........ :)

If you have MT and the noise goes away when the clutch is depressed, then I believe it's normal. I have that noise too. It got much louder after I had the transmission oil changed.

GT86girl541 12-31-2015 12:46 AM

Thanks guys! Yeah I noticed the whole no worrying thing when I started hearing the cricket sound and replaced it only to find it would only return lol luckily the boyfriend works at toyota. It's good to know mines not the only one !

If you're talking about that high pitch sounds, its the crickets. If you're talking about that starts at the beginning of the video (not the crickets) that's just normal boxer engine sounds. I have no idea how to describe that sound though.

I hear that thud thud thud thud thud as well underneath the crickets, it could just be the DI sound or other sounds, I can't pinpoint it

Definitely not DI because it's frequency is at least half of the engine RPM. DI pump is driven at 1.5x engine RPM.

I think @stevesnj might be on to something. Next time OP hears the sound, he should disengage the clutch to see if it goes away. Might be the transmission. Even so, doesn't necessarily mean anything's wrong.

GT86girl541 01-02-2016 12:43 AM

I found that my car does stop making the thudding when I depress the clutch.

If it's repeatable and it annoys you, maybe take it to the dealership and have a tech listen.

All manual transmissions rattle to some degree when idling in neutral. That's just the nature of the beast and this car does not hide any noises. You have to decide if it's just rattle or if it's a cyclic thump-thump-thump sound.

If you do have it checked, please let us know what you are told. Do you live in Portland? We're having an impromptu little meet tomorrow.

GT86girl541 01-02-2016 03:01 AM

Will do!
