Burning clutch smell on resonantly new 86?!?
Hi everyone!
I have recently started to notice a burning clutch smell in my 2012Toyota 86 GTS which has only 8000km! I purchased the car 5 months ago second hand and it only had 6500km on the clock. The car was in pristine condition and the only damage on the car was a few stone chips. The other day I parked my car in the garage and I noticed a subtle but defianate burnt clutch smell. I have noticed it every time I drive it now. I let my dad drive my car today (car enthusiast) and he said it drives just fine.... He can smell the clutch but he passes it off as my just riding it. Sorry for the rant but I would appreciate you're help. I will also add I still have warranty and also an extra 3 ur ectended warranty. Thanks in advance!! Cheers |
Unless you are feeling the clutch slip esecially in higher gearsor you have been launching the car at 6000 rpm its probably not the clutch.
I suspect you might have an oil leak, the most common one is the cam plate oil leak and it leaks onto overpipe causing a smell google brz cam plate leak or frs cam plate oil leak |
Thanks mate. I will check it out. Never dropped the clutch / launched it.
I hope it's an oil leak and not a screwed clutch! |

If you suspect the clutch is slipping, I suggest the following indicator test: Set the emergency/parking brake Put the car in 2nd gear Rev to about 3,000 rpms Slowly let out on the clutch If the engine dies .... the clutch still has life If the engine keeps on running, either your clutch and/or pressure plate is bad Can you tell the difference between burnt clutch and burnt oil .. ?? (burnt clutch smells like ........ well, burnt clutch ..... ;)) humfrz |

Thanks mate! Just tried that and it didn't slip! I'm glad it didn't! I could still smell clutch after that as expected but I have been instructed to wash ms engine block / bay and tranny to remove any clutch dust / smell by Totota. I think I might be a pit paranoid as I let my mum drive the 86 when I needed her ute. Maybe she did burn it a bit and some dust it in the engine and it smells every time I drive it?? Idk. Yeah I'm sure I know the difference between burnt clutch and burn oil. It kinda smells like brakes... But worse. Anyway. Thanks for youre help! |
I think I saw her leaving the grocery store:burnrubber:
