Low cost light weight wheel options in 17x9

What are some lower cost light weight wheel options in 17x9?

Price around 250 or below as RPF1's are that much and they are the answer for many people.
Something different than the rpf1's.
I am looking for 17x9 +35/+42 ~18lbs ~$250.
Affordable/low cost are also welcome, 20ish lbs or lighter please.
Be aware that lower end brands do not have jwl/via/tuv, etc testing and may have fake stampings.

Current list under 18lbs-

~$250 Enkei RPF1 17x9 +35/+45 15.8lbs(I believe weight is for +45, +35 should be 16.1lbs or so)
~$230 720 Form GTF1 17x9 +35 16.8lbs Sold out every where in the US.
~$250 Apex Arc-8 17x9 +42 17.8lbs
~$250 949 Racing 6UL 17x9 +40 17.4lbs 949 Racing 6ul 17x9 +40
~$250 Mach V Awesome 17x9 +42 17.8lbs (5Zigen FN01RC style, others use this style also)
~$170 Konig Hypergram 17x9 +40 17.49lbs link Partial sponsorship for nasahttp://konigwheels.com/nasa/
~170 Konig Ultraform 17x9 +40 17.85lbs link
~$226 Advanti DST Storm S1 17 17x9 +45 17.7lbs

Mid weight 18-20lbs

~210 Enkei TSP-5 17x9 +45 19.75lbs
~210 Enkei TS-10 17x9 +45 19.3lbs
~$139(closeout)-177 TRMotorsports FF10 17x9 +45 18.3lbs link
~$129 TRMotorsports C4 17x9 +45 19.1lbs link
~$169-209 Kosei K6R 17x9 +42 18.8lbs Currently on clearance on tire rack. Original price $209
~$200 Rota Titan 17x9 +42/+45 17.8/18.1lbs Wheel directory(WedsSport tc105n style)
~$100-125 Ambit RE02 17x9 +35 19.95lbs(made by MST and re-badged as ambit) (Enkei RS05RR style) *Beware(see post 20 "Ambit lied about being VIA / JWL registered.") *edit Some versions do not have the markings.

hmong337 12-27-2015 12:09 PM

Those two wheels you listed are pretty much it. I think Rota Titans fall under 20lbs in a 17x9.

TSW Interlagos

<$250/ea, under 18 lbs, strong

I've got a set of these wheels. They look great and the price isn't bad either. Really happy with them so far. I think they are having a special on them now as well.

stockysnail 12-27-2015 03:24 PM

I may get flamed a little for this but I've tracked my xxr 527 17x8.25 et35 and I love them for only $105 a piece. They fit 245/40r17 wheels perfectly and are flush with the fenders as well. I think they are about 20lbs or so. A couple pounds less per wheel isn't going to do anything for me unless I'm a pro racing driver, or the stig where the hundredth of a second will actually do something for me.

xwd 12-27-2015 03:27 PM

The 949 UL rims are 17x9 +40, 17.8lbs, and $239/ea.

I get compliments all the time. The pics they are using for their group buys (the silver BRZ) is mine.

@swarb I don't know if this will be helpful or not, but last week I placed an order for the GTF1's in 17x8, and the shop I bought them from said they could source 2 wheels no problem, but would have to find another 2 from another shop or whatever. Find someone local to you, like I did and see what they can do for you maybe?

TSW only makes 17x8 with the 5x100 bolt pattern, no 17x9.

I been looking for light and low price wheels, I don't know enkei seems like really good deal, I understand that every mother's aunt has one.

From tire rack-
In 2009, Sparco and O.Z. Racing announced their partnership resulting in an exclusive collection of wheels featuring both companies' Italian design heritage and motorsports background, as well as their commitment to using the highest quality materials and O.E.M construction technologies. O.Z.'s licensed Sparco wheels are TÜV certified and tested using the LBF biaxial test. This rigorous testing procedure runs each wheel through a 15,000 km stress test simulating the driving conditions of the Nürburgring circuit to ensure quality and safety are built into every Sparco wheel.

They're a tad over 18lbs weighing in at 18.8lbs a piece. Tirerack has'em on closeout right now for $169 a rim! Regular $209 a piece. Good looking wheel too and strong.

Although about a pound a half heavier than the Enkeis, the RE02s are great wheels for the price. $400 for wheels? With tires you're OTD for a set of just rims.

For reference, 17x9 + 35 on DWS06 255/40s lowered about 2 inches. http://imgur.com/a/XX2Nf

Ambit lied about being VIA / JWL registered. They will soon be pulling down those claims, and removing the casting marks from their wheels. I have over 30 emails from an Ambit Rep, concluding in admission that the wheels are actually not registered. Additionally, I have access to the VIA Wheel Database, and nothing from Ambit nor their manufacturer is registered. Be safe out there....

Thank you for the information.
Are the wheels you purchased stamped jwl or via? Boxes etc too?

TheBigChill 12-30-2015 03:44 PM

Wheels are stamped JWL and VIA, on each side of the valvestem hole. They also made the claim on their website. Supposedly they are removing both.

gotfrank 12-30-2015 04:27 PM

Is this usually the implications of non JWL/PIA certified wheels and replicas?

[ame="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BJeFB6SRslk"]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BJeFB6SRslk[/ame]

TheBigChill 12-30-2015 04:58 PM

Well, I can't say whether or not the wheel will break, and under what condition. My biggest concern is that these guys knowingly marketed JWL/VIA certification, and also have cast it into the wheel.

All VIA registered wheels are in a VIA wheel database, here: http://www.jwtc.jp/open/html/e/index.html

I currently have access to that, and Ambit, nor their manufacturer have wheels listed there. Ambit's manufacturer is Zhejiang Powcan Wheel Manufacture. Now, Powcan does have JWL certified test equipment in-house, BUT, that's not how it works. In order to claim VIA/JWL for a specific wheel or to put the JWL/VIA casting mark on a wheel, the wheel must be tested, the report must be sent to the VIA, and then the manufacturer must register each wheel, in each size, in each offset with the VIA....

makesdrivingfunagain 12-30-2015 05:34 PM

The wheels listed here are really good bang for the buck. Enkei and Kosei are pretty light and affordable. Just remember if you want to save weight also consider the weight of the tire. Some tires are considerably more heavy than others. Good tires in this wheel size can cost as much or near the price of the rim :)

So I purchased the RE02's on Friday last week without having seen this thread. My order was already proving difficult and they still have not been shipped, though i'm told they should go out tomorrow. My intentions are to track this wheel; and saw price, looks, and JWL registered and said why the hell not.

Should I just give in, find a way to cancel the order, and get some RPF1's? They can't charge me a restock fee if they weren't sure if they were in stock for a few days and still haven't left the warehouse.... i assume?

Where exactly did you see the mention of the JWL registered? Please let us know exactly where.
You are better off calling them straight in the morning and get it sorted out. They will try to resist, but just mention the JWL faking you out and it should be no problem.

Also take note that there are versions(not sure if newer) that don't have the JWL/VIA stamps.

Its on the main Ambitwheels.com website, not the separate dealer ad I believe. I don't really give a shit about the replica haters if I can track them without fear of them exploding on me

Edit: ambit website says passes jwl/VIA tests, not "registered". Less basis, outside the whole cancelled and reinitiation of order issue

ap5512 01-12-2016 11:57 AM

@swarb - are you any closer to deciding what you might get? I feel like there are not THAT many choices (unless huge budget) but curious to see if you've narrowed down your option list..

CANCEL NOW BROTHER.

Look for RPF1s or 949Racing wheels. Don't go with knockoff.

a lot of knockoff wheel companies do this. thats because they have no shame when making their mold to rip off of.

@swarb just a little update to my previous post. I ended up calling the shop I put my order in with, and changed it to 17x9 +35 of the 720Form GTF1's. They got back to me a day later and let me know that they'd be arriving around the end of February. There is availability for the wheels, but I think 720Form (DAI?) must do very small production runs at the beginning of every year.

rpf1's because +35 and easily replaceable and easily sold.
720 form gtf1 because +35, price is right, and slightly heavier, but sold out in the US

Yeah seems like DAI has the same distribution as 720 form.
Canada though... Do you know any reputable Canadian retailer that would ship to the US? Exchange rate is very favorable to the US right now. Thanks for the info, maybe I can start contacting dealers here.

I found a ton of them while I was trying to find pricing, but they were mostly all retailers I had never heard of, and many of them were based in Quebec, so I was uncomfortable ordering there in case Google translate didn't work properly. If you can get an amazon.ca seller to ship to you, 1010tires.com has them listed as in stock. When I was doing some pricing, I went to put an order through and it came up to around 1025 Canadian. So, it would be around 7xx for you, plus whatever shipping and duty comes out to.

the site now says this,

"Our wheels meet all JWL/VIA certifications and pass a QC inspection during production.

Ambit Wheels are JWL tested and VIA certified"

Any updates or advice against or for the ambit rt8? just love the way it looks. similar to the volk ze 40

The konig hypergrams seem to be readily available in 17x9 +40 for $661 on ebay with free shipping.

Has anyone run their flow formed wheels for autocross or track days?
