Elephant in the room
Greetings from England!! (Not New England btw ;) )
I've had my GT86 for around 3 weeks now and have got the infamous rattle through clutch and a little bit through steering when going over rough roads at around 5mph. Don't worry I've done a search on this forum (best 86/BR Z/FRS forum I know of) and have found the below link and think this may be it :iono: People in the UK seem to just put up with this issue but i'm definitely not going to! My dealer has diagnosed as Thrust bearing as a possibility and want to strip GB. I think this is :bs:as the GB seems fine to me and reckon the noise will still be there afterwards..Was just hoping someone else has had this issue and got it finally resolved. I know the Aussies believe it's something to do with the JTEKT EPS system not filtering out rattles when going over bumps?? Anyway here's the link - http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=29405 Any feedback would be much appreciated  |

There is a TSB over here for shifter rattle, you just drop it off at the dealer and they take care of it in a few hours and thats that. It is on here somewhere so maybe have your dealer try that first? |

Thanks :)
Sorry guys I should of been more clear on that thread..although I do have the shifter ratte, my main concern is the cluncking and loose feeling through the clutch and steering over rough roads at low speeds, don't hear it when going above 30/40mph. Ps my car is a late 12 with 26k on the clock. |

Welcome to the family! I think what you are going to find is that there are a lot of great aspects to these cars but there also seems to be build quality issues. That being said, I have an automatic and we have a lot of bumpy roads here but I have not noticed any steering issues going over them. I do notice that you feel every rock and pebble in the road compare to other cars I have driven. Did you check your tire pressure? Maybe your tires are over inflated?? I run around 33-34 psi for the best feel. |

Yes those are the pressures I run but what i'm feeling is a rattle through the clutch pedal when engaged only going slowly and a little feeling through the steering. It's as if there is something loose like steering rack or gearbox and they're shaking when going over pot holes at low speeds. I have read that a lot of 86 owners in the UK have this but just live with it. It's going into my dealers in the new year but they think it's something to do with the thrust bearing but I highly doubt it.. |
Anyone with similar issue? :iono:

Bump lol

I have an automatic, but I assume the clutch is hydraulic in these cars, so there is no mechanical connection between the clutch pedal and the tranny. So even if the tranny were moving around the clutch pedal would not. What you are feeling in the steering wheel might be just the mass of the wheel and column vibrating in the bushings. In my opinion these cars have unnecessarily firm springs, so you feel every little bump or undulation in the pavement. |

So i presume you get this knocking feeling as well but it's just normal?? i've never felt this in any car before. It basically feels like something is going to drop off at low speed on a rough road..very disconcerting lol It sounds like the OEM bushes are not doing a very good job then if the column moves around like that and can be felt through the pedal, i should say it's actually felt more through the pedal than anywhere else. So BRZ has stiffer spring rate in front, do they feel it more than us 86/FRS owners i wonder?? |
