Clay is freaking amazing
 

So prior to buying a BRZ I never had a car nice enough to baby. This past weekend I decided to give it the pre-winter wash and wax and used clay for the first time.

While a bit of a pain, clay is absolutely amazing. I takes off all the nasty spots, not just the rough feeling of the paint. I was floored, honest. Good stuff all around.

My only problem, actually, was not dropping the clay on the ground. Happened to me with two different bars :( Anyone have any suggestions on how to reduce the incidences of claying? Over the course of an hour, mistakes are bound to happen, but I figure I can reduce the incidences and not waste the caly.

Just use a small peice that is about the size of your palm and it will make your claybar last a lot longer haha

I clayed my car for the first time and holy shit never knew the car was still that dirty after 6 months of ownership. Thought it was clean as a whistle since i washed it every month or so.

I dropped the clay 1 time. Buddy told me to just take it easy and not rush through it. felt bad since he told me to throw it away and he gave me a new one lol

I wash my car every other day in the summer

I love my car, but shit dude... I'm also lazy.

It's a miracle I even washed my car at all!! :D

Only washed after a spirited drive, to get all the bug guts off.

Clay sponge is the way to go. It can be reused if it's dropped. Just wash it off.

Better yet get the nano scrub pad for a random orbital machine.

I use the Nanoskin clay sponge. Easier to use than traditional clay.

Use it the same way? I have looked at them but wasn't convinced. Just seemed to easy.

Every Friday it isn't raining for me.
By hand in the summer and touchless wash in the winter.

I hate reading threads like these. It makes me feel like I don't deserve my car. I wash a couple times a year, and wax once. Thought clay was for making sculptures. Sigh. Guess I'll have to do better. Thanks for feeding my inferiority complex, all. Merry Christmas.. ;)

I do too, very much. Every time I get a newish car, I tell myself that THIS is the one I'm going to really baby and keep beautiful.. or improve and make "beautifuller." I was pretty good w/ my 325i for the first 8 years. The 560SL doesn't get driven much, gets dried off after getting caught in the rain, and a good hand wax at least every year. Other than that, I always seem to spend what time I have to dedicate to the cars on mechanicals rather than cosmetics... the ol' crotchety "function over form" dominant side of my personality manifesting itself. I know I'm wrong; I've had salt eat two of my favorite cars (the 325i and my beloved '93 Range Rover County LWB) because I didn't take care of the most important organ.. the "skin." My hat is permanently doffed to all of you who take such great care of the outside of your cars. I WILL do better with this one... especially since, and this isn't a dig but just an observation, the metal is SO much thinner and lighter and the paint more fragile than my previous cars.

I will get a new one way before I have to worry about rust so I have no really good motive to do it other than, shiny.
